What to expect in an assessment
-
After 20 years in this business I have heard it all! I will not be shocked or judgmental of any of the thoughts, feelings or experiences that are turning up for you even if they seem irrational or shameful. I will be automatically be impressed that you have made it to therapy and are willing to work on getting better. I do ask for you to be as open and honest as you are comfortable with and if you are not ready, we can simply talk about talking about it.
-
I may use standardised assessments or questionnaires to gather more information about your symptoms, personality traits, or coping mechanisms.
-
We will collaborate to establish your treatment goals and discuss the anticipated duration and frequency of therapy sessions.
-
I will explain your rights as a client to confidentiality as well as any limits of confidentiality.
-
At the end of the assessment we may discuss a follow-up plan which can include scheduling regular therapy sessions or additional assessments if needed.
-
You may receive feedback on preliminary impressions and recommendations for further treatment. You will also be welcome to give feedback on your experience of the session which helps me to attune to your preferences.
-
Depending on the outcome of the assessment, we will decide together on the next steps, which could involve starting therapy, pointers towards self help or any specialist recommendations
How to get the most from your assessment
When preparing for your first therapy session, it can be helpful to take some steps to ensure you make the most of the experience. Here are some key points to consider:
Reflect on your goals and what you hope to achieve through therapy. Consider any specific issues or symptoms you want to address, if you can, put these issues in order of priority. Familiarize yourself with the therapy process and what to expect.
